Dog Treats – Do It Yourself
|Have you ever considered making homemade treats for your dog? If you’re like me, you’ve thought about it many times, but haven’t ever actually gotten around to it. Until now!
Last night, I embarked on a new adventure to bake my own dog treats. Turns out, it’s actually really easy and really quick! (Click on any image to enlarge)

This is the recipe I used:
1 cup flour (or whole wheat flour)
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth, doesn’t matter)
1/2 cup milk (I substituted with rice milk)

Preheat the oven to 400° F. In a medium-sized bowl, combine all ingredients, stir. When it starts to get thick, you’ll have to get your hands in there and knead the dough on a floured surface. Roll the dough out to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness and use cookie cutters (or a knife) to cut out shapes. I used a knife to start cutting out a dog bone shape, but realized that would quickly become tedious, so switched to squares and heart shapes. Put on a cookie sheet and bake 15-17 minutes until golden brown. Let cool, then store in an airtight container.
And voila! You’ve got a beautiful batch of dog cookies!

Serve to your pup and let her enjoy 🙂

This was the easiest recipe I found with common ingredients that most people are likely to have around the house. If you are interested in dabbling with dog treat baking, then try it out! What’s stopping you?

Oh how fun! I might have to try to make some of those! Thanks for the idea!
Looks deeeelicious! Thanks for sharing.
I had always heard that peanuts are bad for your dog. But this recipe says you used chunky which contains pieces of the nut.
Generally it is safe to feed peanuts and peanut butter to dogs so long as they are not allergic. Just like anything, they should only be consumed in moderation! 🙂

I wonder hope people can eat them too.
Of course! 🙂 Though they are a little “plain” compared to the kind of cookies and snacks you might be used to.
Add a banana Dogs enjoy it
Do you have any wheat/grain free recipes for dog treats???
Here’s a recipe for a wheat and grain-free dog treat! 🙂 http://trupanion.com/blog/2010/10/just-bean-it-with-a-pumpkin-dog-treat-recipe/
Question: would it hurt the dog to use self rising flour?
No, it should be fine! Just be sure to omit the baking soda from this recipe since it is already contained within your flour.
