National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day

May 8 is National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, and that’s this Saturday!

This weekend, your task is to make sure that you are extra prepared in case of any kind of emergency. You can start by creating a pet-friendly emergency kit to have in case of any type of disaster. Begin by making sure your pet is micro-chipped and has an identification tag. If someone finds a lost Fido or Fluffy, they will know exactly how to return them to you.

Things to include in your emergency kit:

  • A week’s supply of pet food, canned or dry
  • Bottled water
  • Instructions for your pet’s medications in case someone else has to take care of your pet
  • Blankets
  • Litter and/or poo bags
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Extra toys

Also, it’s a great idea to type up instructions for your pet, should anyone else have to take care of them for a while. This would include feeding instructions, veterinary and emergency vet contacts, any special habits or toys, and contact information for a designated trusted person to watch your pets.

We offer a disaster preparedness checklist on our website.
