Also known as immunoproliferative enteropathy and immunoproliferative small intestinal disease, this condition is seen in the Basenji dog breed. Caused by the progressive malabsorption of nutrients in the intestines, this inflammatory digestive condition results in diarrhea, protein loss, and weight loss. Several causes of this condition are bacterial infection, sensitive gastrointestinal (GI) tract, or intestinal cancer, which may be a rare cause, but a possible one. Symptoms of immunoproliferative enteropathy are nausea, vomiting, and chronic diarrhea. Unfortunately, there is no current cure available for this condition, however if diagnosed during its early stages, it can be controlled with dietary management.
