Preparing Your Pet Bird For An International Move Part 1

Moving to another country will take a lot of planning and can pose many hurdles if you plan on taking your pet bird or parrot with you. While it is much easier to move a cat or dog across international boundaries, birds on the other hand will require a lot of advanced planning and additional cost associated with the move.

Because of the large amount of birds on the endangered species list, moving birds across border lines requires several permits and other requirements that you will need to plan in advance. The very first thing you must do is research your pet birds classification on the CITES species database. This is the most critical part of your research.  When filling out the required permits you will need to know which classification your bird falls within. There are three appendices which lists animals in classifications 1-3. If your bird is classification one, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to move your pet across an international boundary. If your bird is in the other classifications or not on CITES at all, then moving your bird will require a lot less paperwork.

If your bird does not have a leg band then getting one put on by an Avian Veterinarian is required. Most countries will not allow a pet bird in unless it is banded. In addition to banding, your bird will likely need a microchip implant. It is critical to know what character format the microchip will need to be in for your destination country.

Another requirement for moving a pet bird internationally is a departure veterinarian check and arrival veterinarian check. This will have to be pre arranged by you through the departure and arrival airports.  This service of course is not free and will add an additional cost to your travel arrangements.

Stay tuned for Part 2 this Wednesday.
