Pet Health Concerns: Cervical (Dry) Disc

Cervical (dry) disc is a condition that occurs in certain dog breeds, especially in miniature pinschers. This condition is characterized by the rupture or bulging of the disc material in the spine, which causes pressure on the nerves to occur, further leading into neck pain. Overall the vertebral discs of the spine dry out and cause pain to the animal. Unfortunately, the exact cause of this condition is unknown. To diagnose this condition, your veterinarian can do a physical examination and focus on any neurological abnormalities.  Radiograph’s and MRI’s are also available tools for diagnosis. Treatments usually include medications such as steroids, anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, and prescriptions for home care and prevention of other injuries. It varies between pets and how severe the condition is.
