Increase Pet Insurance Coverage by Enrolling Early

Trupanion Pet Insurance
Pet insurance coverage increases with no pre-existing conditions.

Trupanion reminds pet owners that pre-existing conditions can be avoided by enrolling their pet with pet insurance as early as possible.

September 13, 2010 — Enrolling a pet with pet insurance as early as possible will help ensure that exclusions for pre-existing conditions are avoided, says Trupanion, North America’s fastest growing pet insurance company.

Pre-existing conditions are commonly excluded in pet health insurance plans, and are described as any illness which first occurs prior to the pet’s policy inception date. An injury or recurrence of an injury can also be considered a pre-existing condition.

For example, consider these two scenarios involving Max, a beagle puppy:

Max
Beagle puppy, diagnosed with epilepsy at age 2

Scenario 1

Scenario 2

  • Enrolled in pet insurance before age 1.
  • Charged $1,500 after diagnosis, reimbursed $1,350.
  • Charged $200 for an additional visit related to the epilepsy two months later, reimbursed $180.
  • Charged $1,500 after diagnosis, no pet insurance to offer reimbursement.
  • Enrolled in pet insurance.
  • Charged $200 for additional visit related to the epilepsy two months later, reimbursed $0 due to pre-existing condition.
Total out-of-pocket expense: $170 Total out-of-pocket expense: $1,700

Max’s owners were hit much harder in the second scenario. Because they decided not to enroll Max with pet insurance right away, they did not have coverage during the initial diagnosis, and did not receive reimbursement for any follow-up veterinary visits that were related to the initial diagnosis.

Enrolling a pet as early as possible will decrease the chance of pre-existing conditions, and therefore increase the coverage the pet receives.

I am so very impressed with Trupanion. I enrolled our new american cocker ‘Tucker’ after our first or second vet visit. I used to have Pet Plan on my other dogs..too many limits, high deductibles..etc etc… Trupanion is so much better. Oddly the day after the plan came into affect..Tucker got sick…and I mean sick..we had to call the vet in at 2am in the morning. Thankfully he saved our darling baby..he had a blockage in his colon..that was about 3 weeks ago…I submitted our almost 1,000 vet bill to Trupanion..and received our check within 5 days, 90% reimbursement. THANK YOU Trupanion…I promote you to ever dog/pet owner I know…everyone there is so personable..I even received an email after I submitted the form telling me it was being processed…I’m so glad my vet recommended your company…hugs and kisses from Tucker
