Pet Insurance Claim of the Week: Gastric Torsion (Bloat)

Pilot is a Newfoundland that has seen his fair share of health conditions since he was enrolled with Trupanion five years ago. He has dealt with skin conditions and a torn cruciate ligament, and more recently experienced a life-threatening condition called gastric torsion (more commonly known as bloat).

Gastric torsion is a condition that occurs mostly in larger dog breeds in which the stomach becomes twisted over itself. It usually happens if the dog has just consumed a large meal or water and is active immediately after. Pets must receive immediate veterinary attention and surgery in most cases, in order to survive.

Pet insurance claim amount: $4,110.10
Deductible applied: $0.00
Exam fee + emergency consultation: -$243.00
10% co-pay: -$386.71
Trupanion repaid: $3,480.39

We recommend that all large breed dogs be insured in case of emergencies like these that must be addressed immediately, and can also be very expensive!
