Trupanion Reviews Kyjen Products

Sally Squirrel

Sally Squirrel Real Animal Squeaker Mat

As you know, Stacy K., the social channels manager here at Trupanion, attended BlogPaws last week. At the conference she met representatives from Kyjen, a toy company based out of Colorado. Kyjen makes unique, innovative dog products such as travel gear, puzzle toys, and holiday items.  This week we were lucky enough to recieve a few toys from Kyjen to test and review. While Kyjen did send us the toys for free, all opinions in this post are mine.

When we opened the box, we were excited to find several amazing toys, from a star-shaped puzzle toy to a fishing pole-like teaser toy. But I went immediately to a large, flat, furry toy that looked like a squirrel. I found out later that it was called the Sally Squirrel Real Animal Squeaker Mat.

Jackson and Ava

Jackson and Ava test their new toy.

This toy honestly looks like a real squirrel (albeit much, much bigger) and includes 12 squeakers in the body and a honking sound in the tail. Kyjen states that toys that mimic the natural colors and textures of animal fur tap into the instinctual drives that help keep dogs healthy and engaged. I was planning to test that with my Spaniel mix, Jackson. Jackson loves toys, especially ones that squeak. I was pretty sure he was going to go crazy for Sally Squirrel. What I didn’t expect, though, was that my Italian Greyound, Ava, would also get involved!

Ava doesn’t play with toys. She isn’t a ‘normal’ dog, in that she doesn’t enjoy going outside, going for walks, or playing with toys. She would be completely content sleeping on the couch all day, rolling her eyes at her ‘big brother’s’ antics.

But when I took out Sally Squirrel and she found that honking tail, she was infatuated. Both dogs played with it all night long, dragging it from the living room to the kitchen to the bedroom.

Final review:
Durability: 5/5 (But keep in mind that Jackson nor Ava are that intent on tearing toys apart. They are pretty gentle.)
Entertainment value: 5/5
Aesthetics: 5/5
Human enjoyment: 4/5 (12 squeakers can get a little harsh on the ears!)

I can for sure say it was definitely a win in our house!
