This week’s featured claim is about a Yorkie named Chance that unfortunately had problems with megaesophagus. This is a condition in which the muscles of the esophagus do not contract properly. Because of this condition, food cannot efficiently move down the esophagus. An affected animal may experience weight loss and loss of appetite, and can also experience aspiration pneumonia if food goes down the trachea.
In Chance’s case, it appears that his condition was due to a foreign body, though megaesophagus can also be congenital. Chance was hospitalized for three days and needed X-rays, oxygen, various medications, and a scope to remove the foreign body.
