Aging Pets and Warning Signs of Health Complications

Aging is a natural process for pets, and we want to make sure that they have the most enjoyable life as a senior pet as possible. Being an older animal, they may be prone to more types of age-related health conditions and there are a few steps we can take to properly deal with these.

  • Increase your senior pet’s regular veterinary examinations. It is recommended that senior pets see their vet for a check-up twice per year to ensure that any health conditions are caught early on.
  • old black dogLearn about your pet’s breed. Some smaller dog breeds and cats are considered seniors at age 15 while larger dogs reach their senior years around age 7. Be sure to speak with your veterinarian about your pet’s situation and when you should start scheduling exams more frequently.
  • Consider senior pet food. Senior pets often need a diet that is lower in calories and higher in fiber.
  • Look out for warning signs of health conditions. Change of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and changes in behavior are a few signs that your pet’s health may not be up to par. If you notice anything unusual, be sure to consult with your veterinarian.
  • Consider pet insurance. We all know that treatment for health conditions can quickly get expensive. Insuring your pet before the onset of any conditions will help ease the blow of any vet bills you may encounter as your pet ages.

With the right care and attention, you can ensure that your pet enjoys its golden years in life.
