Pet Health Concerns: Follicular Dermatitis

Follicular dermatitis is a skin condition, similar to a human pimple, which is usually caused by an inflamed hair follicle. Similar in composition to a human pimple, this skin bump causes swelling and pus like discharge. If these skin bumps become infected, the condition could possibly increase in severity by weakening the immune system and cause hair loss in the cat or dog. This condition can occur in a variety of dog breeds, however most commonly it is seen in Standard Schnauzers. To treat follicular dermatitis in pets, the pet owner can clean the skin using pet safe disinfectants, antibacterial creams, or oral antibiotics prescribed by the veterinarian.

By enrolling your pet with Trupanion pet insurance, your cat or dog’s policy will include coverage for diagnostic tests, medications, surgeries, hereditary and congenital disorders, as long as treatment for a certain condition is required after enrolling and is not pre-existing.

Has your pet ever experienced any problems with follicular dermatitis? If so, we would love to hear from you and any comments, advice, experiences, of thoughts on this condition.
