How to know which pet insurance is accepted at your veterinarian

When shopping for pet insurance, you may do one or a few of the following:

  • Search the internet
  • Ask friends for recommendations
  • Ask your veterinarian for recommendations

As a result of asking the veterinarian, I have often seen questions or concerns around veterinarians “accepting” certain providers and wanted to clear up any misconceptions.

When your veterinarian makes pet insurance provider suggestions, it does not mean that your options are limited to those suggested by the vet. Unlike human health insurance, pet insurance works on a reimbursement model which means you can choose any provider and visit any veterinarian. In order to file a claim, all your veterinarian has to do is fill out their portion of the claim form and provide the invoice for the visit so that you can submit them to the pet insurance provider.

So get out there, do your due diligence, and find a pet insurance plan that best suits your needs without the worry of what is and is not “accepted” at your vet.

Moral of the story: All pet insurances are “accepted” at all vets!
