America’s Top Dog Breeds This Year

New statistics from the American Kennel Club are out and they reveal America’s top choices for dog breeds for 2011!

Holding strong in spot number one for its 21st consecutive year is the Labrador Retriever. German Shepherds are still in spot number two, however for spot 3, the Beagle outnumbered Yorkshire Terriers!

“The beagle’s merry personality combined with his love of outdoor activities make him such a wonderful family pet that I wouldn’t be surprised to see this spunky breed sniff his way to the top of the list next year,” AKC spokesperson Christina Duffney said in an interview with TODAY.com.

The Rottweiler snuck onto the list, displacing the Shih Tzu from the top 10. The complete list is as follows:

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. German Shepherd
  3. Beagle
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Yorkshire Terrier
  6. Bulldog
  7. Boxer
  8. Poodle
  9. Dachshund
  10. Rottweiler

Some interesting things that AKC notes is that larger dog breeds are coming back onto the top list whereas smaller dogs have been declining in popularity over the past few years. They are also seeing an increase in popularity of setter breeds such as the Irish Setter and English Setter.

Is your dog’s breed on this list?
