Dog Food Recall Linked To Human Salmonella Cases

News is spreading like wildfire about recent human salmonella infections that are likely caused by infected dog food.

We have blogged about Diamond Pet Foods’ three recent recalls and now the FDA is finding links between these recalls and the salmonella poisoning cases. The recalls include Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice Formula, Diamond Puppy Formula and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula.

Fourteen human illnesses have been reported in Alabama, Connecticut, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. There have been no deaths but five victims have been hospitalized according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Humans can become infected by salmonella by handling contaminated food and not washing their hands, or coming into contact with infected pet feces in which the bacteria can live for up to six weeks.

According to KVUE.com, other pet foods have been recalled including Costco’s Kirkland brands, Natural Balance Pet Foods, Taste of the Wild, and WellPet. Check their list to see if your pet’s food (both dogs and cats) is one of the recalled items.
