Tru Interview: Ashley with Duke and Jake

I am happy to introduce you to Ashley, the newest member of our Tru Interview series. She tells us about her two dogs, Duke and Jake.

Ashley, Duke, and JakeWhat is your background? How are you involved with pets?
We had a variety of pets growing up.  My first pet was a dog named Cody that looked just like Lassie. I was only one when we got him and so he put up with a lot from my crazy one-year-old self. He was used as a pillow many times.  We had many more animals throughout the years.  We had cats, hamsters, bunnies, and of course frogs that we would collect in our yard.  When I was 16, I rescued a puppy that we named Tank. He was one of the best dogs I have ever known.  Unfortunately, he got out of my parents yard last year and was hit by a car. He is now in doggy heaven having a blast, I am sure.

Do you have pets of your own? What are their stories?
My husband and I have two dogs.  Duke is a 6-year-old 90-pound Chocolate Lab that my husband got in college. He is very mellow and is like a big, loving puppy dog. Duke has been known to eat his fair share of things, including a bag full of brownies, 5 pounds of frozen halibut, a boat cover, a bbq cover, a dog bed, camping chairs, a pair of my leather chaps, rocks from the bottom of a smoker and much more. He also loves to eat the nuts and apples that fall out of the trees in our backyard. Amazingly, the worst that ever happens is he throws up.  Jake is our 7-year old Yellow Lab.  He is the sweetest, most gentle dog in the world.  We adopted him from a friend’s cousin who could no longer put up with the dog hair in his house. We gladly brought Jake home with us.  Jake loves to go on walks and to cuddle.  He just loves to be around people and to lay in anyone’s lap who will have him. His favorite things to do are to go swimming at the lake and to play fetch.

Jake and DukeWhat is your favorite dog breed and why? Cat breed?
My favorite dog breed would definitely have to be Labs. They have amazing personalities and are great with children.  However, I have become pretty fond of Yorkies since my parents have one and my brother and his girlfriend have two.

Do you tend to give your pets human names (i.e. Sophia, George) or pet names (i.e. Bandit, Shadow)?
I would say our pet names have been all over the board ranging from people names to pet names. Some of the names of our pets growing up have included Chunky, Michelle, Mickey, Pepper, Charlie, Mr. T, and Lily.

If your dog/cat was a human, what do you think his/her profession would be?
If Jake was a human, he would be a professional athlete in a non-contact sport.  He is very athletic, but also very gentle.  I could see him being an Olympic swimmer.  Duke would be a professional eater.  He would enter every eating contest in the world and win.

Who is your favorite TV/movie animal (i.e. Snoopy, the Geico gecko, Lady or the Tramp)?
Lady and the Tramp are both classic movie pets and I love them both. It is too hard to narrow this down. I have always loved Sebastian the Crab from the Little Mermaid.

A big thank you to Ashley for sharing her story! If you are interested in participating in the Tru Interview Series, please email me at heather.kalinowski@trupanion.com.
