On Saturday, October 6, Trupanion had the honor of attending the 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards in Beverly Hills. This event celebrated the finalists in the Hero Dog Awards competition – America’s top dogs chosen as winners in each of the following national categories:  Law Enforcement/Arson Dogs; Service Dogs; Therapy Dogs; Military Dogs; Guide Dogs; Search and Rescue Dogs; Hearing Dogs; and Emerging Hero Dogs.

Trupanion was the proud 2012 Hero Dog Awards sponsor of the Service Dog category. The winner of this category is Holly, a Seizure Alert dog who alerts her owner Shanna Wilkinson when Shanna is about to suffer an epileptic episode. This allows Shanna to be able to live life to its fullest without fear. We had the

pleasure of meeting Holly and Shanna (and Shanna’s mom, Cindy) at the event. What a fabulous family! We’re honored to be a part of their story.

While the dogs were absolutely the stars of the show, there were several human celebrities in attendance as well. The show was hosted by the talented Kristin

Chenoweth, who brought her adorable dog Maddy as her date. The musical guest was Jewel, who commanded the room with her amazing voice during each of her performances. Joey Lawrence greeted the Hero Dog Awards finalists as the Red Carpet host, and the legendary Betty White received the much-deserved American Humane Association Legacy Award. Other celebrity guests included Pauley Perrette, Jake Pavelka,

Naomi Judd, Jenni Pulos, Michelle Forbes, Megyn Price, Victoria Stilwell, Edie McClurg, and Candy Spelling.

While this event celebrated eight specific Hero Dogs, the event was really a tribute to all the hero dogs in all of our lives, celebrating the powerful relationship between dogs and people and recognizeing the extraordinary acts of heroism performed by ordinary dogs.

During a nationwide search over the course of six months, hundreds of dogs

from all 50 states were nominated and more than three million votes were cast by the American public to choose the finalists.

The two-hour program will be broadcast nationwide by Hallmark Channel on November 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. Mark your calendars and watch along! Trust me, it’s an event not to be missed!
