“In April 2015, we noticed our German Shepherd, Sophie, was starting to limp a little and seemed like she was sore after going up and down stairs and to the park. When we took her to the veterinarian, they initially thought it might be joint related since she was 7 years old. She was given a prescription of Rimidyl and we went on our way.
After 5 months of being on Rimidyl, we noticed she was not getting any better and instead seemed to be limping more. Her vet did an initial evaluation and suggested we go to a neurologist because she was showing signs of Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). When her blood test came back positive for DM, we were devastated. Not only is DM not curable, but it’s progressive. We immediately started Sophie in hydrotherapy and acupuncture. Even though we knew that Sophie would eventually lose the use of her hind limbs, we were told those treatments can sometimes postpone the paralysis.
Almost a year after first noticing symptoms, we finally had to get Sophie a cart. She is now more independent and confident. Wecan see her enjoy life more. Trupanion has been there for all of this and covered all of the treatments for the DM. Because ofTrupanion, we have been able to increase our time with Sophie and her ability to do normal “doggie” things. We will be forever grateful for Sophie’s team of veterinarians and Trupanion for helping her enjoy her time with us.”
