“I love her the way you love her,” a co-worker once said. I got Maia when she was 10 weeks old and the moment I held her little face in my hands, I knew there wasn’t anything I wouldn’t do for her.
In the fall of 2015 right before her 5th birthday, Maia developed a poor appetite and her lymph nodes began to swell. She was diagnosed with B cell lymphoma and I was devastated. She was my family and I couldn’t lose her. The veterinarian mentioned that we could give her another 1-2 years at most with chemotherapy and steroids but we were just prolonging the inevitable. I was not going to lose her without a fight. After much research, I discovered Dr. John Chretin at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital who was performing bone marrow transplants with the potential to cure dogs with B-cell lymphoma. However, between the chemotherapy and the transplant, the cost would be approximately $35,000-40,000.
Fortunately, when Maia was a puppy I decided to purchase insurance through Trupanion. Amazingly, Trupanion would cover Maia’s transplant, in fact, 90% of all the bills associated with lymphoma. Such a relief!
We proceeded with chemotherapy and she went into remission quickly. On February 6, 2016, we flew from Maryland to California for her transplant. I had to leave her for 2 weeks, which broke my heart. However, Dr. Chretin and his staff were supportive and comforting. On February 27 we flew home! As of May 8, 2016, Maia has remained cancer free! In addition, Maia will hopefully be receiving T-cells from Aurelius Biotherapeutics through the Perseus Foundation’s T-cell Project, part of a new immunotherapy treatment in canines with lymphoma. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Chretin and his staff
as well as Trupanion. It is because of them that Maia has gotten a second chance. Maia, my brave, strong girl is beating cancer!
