Favorite Breeds of US Cities

Call it city pride, or simply a desire to be distinctive, but residents of major metropolitan areas are often proud to boast about the qualities that make their city special. And what is more special than our beloved dogs? We recently searched our database to determine which breed of dog was most popular in six major US cities, and thereby best represented that city. Take a look at the results below.

New York

Riza, a Havanese dog breedIt shouldn’t be surprising that pet owners in New York are drawn to small dogs. With small apartment living and very few open spaces for dogs to run, these dog lovers need a breed that thrives in small spaces. The Havanese, with its happy, curious nature, is the perfect fit.

Chicago

English Bulldog photoAs one of the top 10 funniest cities in America, it seems logical that a dog breed known for its comical nature would win the hearts of pet owners in Chicago. The English Bulldog is also one of the few dog breeds that would thrive in the harsh Chicago winters, since they prefer to hang out indoors.

Boston

Willow, a Labrador Retriever puppyLabrador Retrievers are the most common breed registered in the United States, according to the AKC, but in our search, pet owners in Boston love these dogs even more so than others around the country. Labs are known to be friendly, obedient, and eager to please.

Los Angeles

Angus, a Maltipoo dog breedAccording to Bath Spa University’s 2012 online survey, people who own toy breeds like the Maltipoo (a hybrid of the Maltese and Poodle) are intelligent and open to new experiences. Los Angeles’ creative landscape fits that description well, so the fact that this breed is the most popular breed for L.A. isn’t a surprise.

San Francisco

Bella, a French BulldogLike New York City, San Francisco has a reputation for apartment living and concrete back yards. So pet owners in the Bay Area need a canine companion that likes to chill inside. Enter the French Bulldog, the playful yet easygoing pooch that could care less for exercise.

Seattle
