“Frank, an 8.5-year-old Great Dane, was rescued by myself and Dr. Julie Dudak with quite the medical history. He had previously recovered from canine parvo, heartworm disease, and a prostatic abscess but had been healthy for several years. He was eligible for insurance without pre-existing conditions and was enrolled with Trupanion in the fall of 2014.
In December of 2014, Frank began to act like he was in pain and was not being himself. Bloodwork, urinalysis and x-rays revealed some arthritic changes in his back and a urinary tract infection. He was placed on medications but continued to decline.
Frank’s pain worsened and he was not responding to therapy. He was evaluated by a neurologist at Carolina Veterinary Specialists. After an abdominal ultrasound, and an MRI of his spine, it was ultimately revealed that Frank was suffering from a condition called discospondylitis. He required several days of injectable antibiotics followed by a course of two very expensive antibiotics (over $1,000 per month). Frank also required medications for nausea and four types of pain medications to control his extreme discomfort.
Over time, Frank has been slowly recovering from his condition. He is still on two antibiotics but no longer requires pain medications and is getting stronger and acting friskier every day. He will require additional care and is still on antibiotic therapy and Trupanion continues to cover it.”
