Ready for any Emergency: Disaster Preparedness

Are you and your pet prepared for an emergency? May 12 is National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, and it is a great time to make sure you and your family are prepared for any emergency. Create a list of what you need, or refer to the disaster preparedness checklist available on our website. Make sure your pet’s identification tag is updated and if you haven’t microchipped your pet yet, now is the time. If someone finds a lost Fido or Fluffy, they will know exactly how to return them to you.

One of the most valuable things you can do is to make an emergency kit. Don’t forget your pet! Here are some items you need to include:

  • A week’s supply of pet food, canned or dry
  • Bottled water
  • Instructions for your pet’s medications in case someone else has to take care of your pet
  • Blankets
  • Litter and/or poo bags
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Extra toys

If there is a chance you need to evacuate your home, make sure you have an emergency kit that will travel and include important medical and ownership documentation for your pet. Make sure you have a carrier that is accessible, pet’s need to be crated in shelters. It never hurts to have a backup plan, so talk to friends and family about your pet plan too, and provide instructions for your pet’s care. This would include feeding instructions, veterinary and emergency vet contacts, any medications, special habits or toys, and contact information for a designated trusted person to watch your pets.

What will you include in your disaster preparedness plan?
