With pets in the workplace on the rise, our pets need something to do while they are in the office. Enrichment toys are a great way to keep your dog occupied while you work.
While some pets may enjoy the atmosphere of an office, not all pets are used to cubicles and meeting rooms.
Certainly, Trupanion is no stranger to having pets in office, with over 350 pets in office, keeping busy is important.
So by introducing enrichment toys to your pet’s space, you are providing a safe and fun activity that will stimulate them and keep their attention.
We sat down with Trupanion pet program manager, J. Marmol, and in-house animal behaviorist, Camille Barrios UW-A.A.B to discuss enrichment toys and ways to keep your dog busy while at work.
Enrichment toys: how to keep your dog busy while at work
The importance of keeping your dog busy at work
We all want to have a productive workday, and that includes our pets.
“When dogs get bored they start finding ways to entertain themselves, which can often times involve behaviors you don’t like, like chewing or barking,” says Barrios. “When they aren’t being stimulated they are much more likely to be paying attention to everything else going on in the environment, and thus much more likely to react to a dog barking or collar tags jingling,” adds Barrios.
In addition “a dog with pent-up energy, whether physical or mental, will be much more distracted, anxious, and prone to behavioral issues,” says Marmol.
A healthy balance of emotional, mental, and physical activity will help curb those behavior issues.
The introduction of enrichment toys
By introducing enrichment toys to your pet’s space, you are providing a safe and fun activity that can stimulate them mentally, physically, and emotionally. “In a busy work environment, something as simple as a Kong can keep your pet distracted and calmer,” says Marmol.
Types of Enrichment toys to incorporate into your pet’s work day
There are different types of enrichment toys that you can incorporate into your pet’s workday.
For instance, if your pet like exploring and searching for items, they might enjoy a snuffle mat. Also, if your pet likes figuring out puzzles they might enjoy a puzzle box. The new activity will be fun and exciting for your pup in an unknown environment.
“Wobbler toys, puzzle feeders, and snuffle mats are all great tools, especially for food-motivated pets. If you’ve got a quieter cube, food and treat puzzles are excellent. It gives your pets something to do so they aren’t bored, and makes them work for their food,” cites Marmol.
Another option for incorporating an enrichment toy would be a simple game of Frisbee or toss on a break or during lunch time. Your pup will love the interactive one-on-one playtime with you.

“Activities and enrichment toys are a great way to stimulate the mind, it allows for you to change things up, and keep things new and exciting. In addition, it is a great learning and training opportunity, “says Barrios.
A new environment can be intimidating, so by providing mental stimulation and encouragement, your pup can look forward to going to the workplace with all their new favorite activities.
