What makes Trupanion unique is the team members and what they bring to their role every day. Often inspired by dogs and cats, our team members each bring a special skill set to their work. In this installment of our Working at Trupanion series, we sat down with Trupanion People and Culture Partner Serena Sultan on what it’s like to help people and pets every day.
Working at Trupanion: an inside look at our team
role at Trupanion
People & Culture Partner.
How did your career journey
start at Trupanion?
I started as a Claims Assistant and worked in that role for about six months before becoming an Assistant Team Manager with the Data Assisting Team. Soon after, I became a Team Manager.
Alternatively, in February 2020, I transitioned into the people operations team. This was a major career shift for me after 12 years in management and I love it!
Since I am a boater, I like to say I am in the right seat on the boat being in human resources. For example, I just love working with different areas of the business and helping team members be the best that they can be.
Further, before Trupanion, I
worked in Hawaii on whale watch boats where I used my degree in Marine Biology.
What do you love most about
working remotely at Trupanion?
I love seeing my dogs every day and taking them for a walk at lunchtime. They now know that when I come out of my home office at midday, I am probably going to put my sneakers on, and then that means…. WALK! We have explored so much more of our neighborhood and seeing the summer flowers has been wonderful.
What do you love most about
It’s hard to say just one thing… a few that come to mind are helping people achieve a higher level of fulfillment by feeling heard, working through a roadblock, or having a chat about career goals and planning. Also, I enjoy working with different teams and areas of the business too. Most of all, the team I’m on is amazing!
What is the favorite part of
Chatting with and helping team members. For instance, whether that means being a good listener or helping them in planning career steps or both!
What’s it like to work on the Trupanion People Operations team?
It’s inspiring and fun! We have an amazing group of team members on the People Operations team. They energize the team, lift one another up, and we mix in some fun throughout.
Also, memes certainly go a long way in a virtual world amid a pandemic. Fortunately, it’s been so heartwarming to lean on one another when things feel tough.
What inspires the work that you
My family, the world I have seen, and all of the people along the
way. Every single person has their own story to tell, a perspective through
which they view the world, and their own unique gifts to share with the
I love hearing from so many different people. I hope to raise my four-year-old to be an open and kind person, someone who listens to others and values the diversity of our world and what beauty can come from it.
What do you value most about
I value that I’m trusted. For example, I’m trusted by team members to be a safe place to share. Also, I’m trusted by my manager to go out and help people and make a positive contribution to continuing to make Trupanion such a kick-butt place to work!

collaboration, and a love of pets are just some of the ideals that drive our
team members to work hard every day. Whether we’re surrounded by people or
pets, we love giving back and helping all the pets that need veterinary care.
