There’s nothing we love more than seeing happy and healthy pets. In fact, that’s why we work so hard every day so that the pets we all love can receive the best in veterinary care. It takes a lot of different departments to come together to help dogs and cats. Naturally, with the advancements in veterinary medicine, it’s no surprise that technology is at the forefront of the pet health space. In this installment of our Working at Trupanion series, we sat down with Trupanion IT Support Technician Sarah Scott to learn more about what it’s like to work for tech in Seattle for a leader in the pet industry.
Seattle: helping pets at Trupanion
role at Trupanion
I’m an IT Support Technician. This means I support the daily functioning of Trupanion systems so that our call center is running smoothly and our claims are all being processed. Also, I may do everything from supporting our proprietary software, troubleshooting, or learning why your computer might not turn on.
you begin your career at Trupanion?
This is a crazy story. I learned about Trupanion from an internet search back when pet health insurance was still pretty new on the market. I decided right then I wanted to work at Trupanion and make a difference in pet’s lives.
It was a unique opportunity to put my passion for dogs and technology together in one role. I applied to Trupanion the moment I saw an opening on the technology team. My application did not make it through and was not given an interview.
Alternatively, I was still attending school at the time so my hours most likely would not have worked.
Once I graduated from high school and college, I sent out a cold email to the head of the Technology department asking for an interview. Also, I highlighted my skills in tech and my passion for dogs.
Fortunately, the next morning, I was invited out to lunch by the head of the department. Then, I was shortly hired and have been working at Trupanion for five years now.
you love most about working remotely at Trupanion?
Remember the days when you would ask your high school teacher or college professor if you can have class outside on a nice sunny day? I finally get to take my work outside! I enjoy drinking my morning cup of coffee outside on my porch sitting in the sun with my dogs.
However, the best thing about working remotely is staying at home to raise my new puppy. For example, I compete in a variety of dog sports, and having a solid foundation of training is important.
Naturally, being at home has allowed me the chance to bond and train my puppy. It’s been awesome to do short mini-training sessions throughout the day.
If I didn’t have the option to work remotely at Trupanion, I wouldn’t have been able to raise and train my puppy, like I’m doing right now.
you love most about your role?
I love my team at Trupanion. Fortunately, my team is amazing at supporting each other. Also, I’ve learned quite a bit since starting my career here at Trupanion. Naturally, I have my team to thank for it, we’re always helping each other learn and grow.
Further, technology is something that is always changing and my team is always ready to share their knowledge and help other team members.
the favorite part of your day?
Oddly enough, my favorite part of my day is my team’s daily meeting. Since we’re now working remotely, we have daily meetings to check-in with each other and go over any hard to save tech problems. I love working with my team and since I cannot see them in person this is the next best thing. I miss seeing them all in the office.
What is it like to work for tech in Seattle on the Trupanion IT team?
I work on the tech desk team which is just a small subsection of the larger IT team here at Trupanion.
For example, the tech desk team is the one you call when your computer won’t turn on or your mouse won’t move. My team is a small and close-knit group of team members.
When we’re not working and actively trying to solve problems with our heads down, you may find us exchanging memes, video game reviews, and the newest news on technology.
I’m a pretty nerdy chic and appreciate all things video game and computer technology related, so I get to chat all about the tech stuff with people who understand my techie words and language.
While working, we tend to work together as a team and we’re always willing to jump in and help one another out if needed.
Out of all the places I have worked, the Trupanion tech desk is by far my favorite team. We always have each other’s backs and it’s awesome to have a team that supports you.
you value most about the work that you do?
For instance, the work I do to keep Trupanion systems running smoothly helps pets get the best veterinary care they possibly can receive.
By, ‘keeping the systems running and claims processing smoothly’, I’m helping save pet’s lives. While getting your computer to turn back on after it has turned itself off may not seem like saving pets lives at the moment, if I step back and see the big picture of Trupanion’s mission, I’m saving pet’s lives.
That’s what I value most.
