In January 2019, I noticed that Sargon had developed a slight limp in his left front leg. I am a veterinarian and was unable to determine the source of pain that was causing his limp. A colleague of mine also examined him and could not determine a source of pain. Further, radiographs were taken and no abnormalities were found.
Thus began our 11-month journey into Sargon’s lameness. He was examined by two physiotherapists, two surgeons, and a neurologist. Also, he had multiple radiographs, MRI’s, ultrasounds, and a CT scan before we finally determined the source of this lameness. Sargon was diagnosed with a nerve sheath tumor in the radial nerve.
On December 5th, 2019, Sargon had his leg front leg amputated.
Although the choice to amputate his leg was a difficult decision, we knew the amputation would relieve his pain. What we weren’t sure of was whether or not Sargon would be able to return to his biggest joy in life, hiking.
His physiotherapists warned us that he may not be able to hike as a tripawd, but we wanted to give him a chance. We carefully built up his strength and now Sargon is back to hiking distances of up to 15 km. We are a bit more careful with the terrain we tackle, but we have our hiking beast back.
As we approach the first year anniversary of his amputation, we find ourselves thankful for all the wonderful care that he received. His Trupanion coverage allowed us to get to the root of his illness, without ever having to base our decision about his care, on finances.
Sargon continues to stay in tiptop shape with the help of his physiotherapists. We hope that he will have many more years of hiking ahead of him.
Thank you for reading my story and thank you for helping to extend our time with our wonderful hound!
