Breeder Support FAQs

How does it work?

The Breeder Support Program is simple. This program allows you to send your puppies/kittens home with certificates for 30 days of Trupanion coverage to help them have a happy, healthy start in their new home. Just print out a copy of your certificate and send it home with new owners. From there, it is up to them to call or go online within 24 hours to activate. We do not ask for any payment information when new owners activate the certificate. The certificate automatically expires after 30 days unless the owner tells us they would like to continue with a full policy.

How much does it cost for me to join?

There is no cost to join the Breeder Support Program. All you need to do to participate is answer a few questions on our questionnaire.

I live in Canada — can I still participate?

Absolutely! We encourage all breeders from Canada, the US, and Puerto Rico to apply to be a part of the program.

If a new owner wanted to continue, how much would it cost them?

The monthly premium varies based on age, gender, breed, primary veterinary hospital and location. That said, the average monthly premium is about $30 for cats and $60 for dogs. If you or the new owner would like to get a better idea of what their monthly premium would be, you to try out our quote tool or call us at 888.615.8318.

What do I get for participating?

For each activation and conversion, you earn points that you can redeem for Amazon gift cards. You can also earn points by referring friends to the program. To redeem your points, all you need to do is email us and let us know how many you would like to redeem.

Can I activate the certificates myself?

No, the new owner needs to activate their certificate. They can activate by calling or going online within 24 hours of taking their pet home.

How old does a pet need to be to activate a certificate?

Pets need to be at least 8 weeks old. Trupanion is unable to insure pets who are under the age of 8 weeks old.

Can I use this for puppies/kittens that I’ve already sent home?

Unfortunately not. You can only use this for pets as they leave your home, not after they already left.

Are hereditary and congenital conditions covered? What about spay/neuter?

We cover any injury or illness, including hereditary and congenital conditions, as long as they're not pre-existing. We define pre-existing as any condition that shows symptoms in the 18 months before enrollment. We do not cover routine and wellness care, such as spay/neuter. As always, call us anytime with your policy questions at 888.615.8318.

What’s the deductible?

The certificate deductible is $250. However, if an owner continues coverage after the 30 days are up, they can choose their own deductible. This can be anything ranging from $0 to $1,000.

I’m interested in signing up my own pets. Is there a discount for multiple pets?

We are unable to offer a discount for enrolling multiple pets.

I have a friend who’s interested in joining. How do I refer them?

All you need to do is have them list your name as the answer to the question "How did you hear about us?" on the questionnaire. You can also send us their contact information if you'd prefer for us reach out to them. Please be sure to get their permission before giving out their contact information.

Do I need to register my litter with you?

You do not have to register your litter with us, just give new owners the certificates you print out. From there, it is up to them to call or go online to activate within 24 hours.
