Your pet's oral health matters

Dental coverage can be complicated with other pet insurance companies. We’ve provided this breakdown to help make things as clear as possible. Just remember, we’re available 24/7 so if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please don’t hesitate to call: 855.210.8749.

What's covered

Comprehensive dental coverage for new, unexpected dental illness and injury, including:

  • Extractions of permanent and baby (deciduous) teeth
  • Coverage for retained baby teeth (if your pet is enrolled by 6 months old)
  • Advanced dentistry, including caps (crowns)
  • Endodontic treatments, including root canals
  • Fractured jaw and/or fractured tooth repair
  • Tooth resorption and tooth root abscesses

We love informed decisions. See our policy for full coverage details.

As with other pet insurance policies, a Trupanion policy does not cover pre-existing conditions consistent with dental disease.

To avoid pre-existing conditions, it helps to enroll your pet at a young age.

How we compare

Trupanion - medical insurance for pets logo

Treatment for all new dental illnesses and injury

No dental coverage, except cost for extraction or reconstruction of teeth damaged in an accident.

No treatment for dental illness. Treatment for new dental injuries, if approved by their Medical Director.

If there are any signs of dental illness prior to enrolling, there is no coverage for any new and unrelated dental injuries or illnesses.

What's not covered: As with most pet insurance companies, a Trupanion policy will not cover teeth cleaning (prophylaxis) or its associated fees (such as anesthesia or pre-anesthetic blood work). We also do not cover toothbrushes and toothpastes or dental foods, chews, or rinses.

Your role

We rely on pet owners to properly care for cats and dogs in order for our coverage to take effect. For a Trupanion policy to pay for dental care, pet owners need to:
