Is Your Pet Eligible for Pet Insurance?

There are two basic requirements to be eligible for lifelong pet insurance from Trupanion:

You must own a cat or dog between 8 weeks and 14 years of age
You must be a US, Canadian, or Puerto Rican resident

After meeting these requirements, some pet owners have additional questions. Below, we answer some of the most common questions about eligibility.

Common eligibility questions for Trupanion pet insurance

I just adopted my pet and I’m not certain about their age. Am I still eligible for pet insurance?

Yes! Your veterinarian will do his or her best to pinpoint your pet’s age and we'll use their best guess to create a pet insurance policy for you.

My pet is sick right now. Will you still cover her?

Any sickness your pet has when they enroll is considered pre-existing, so it won't be covered under your pet insurance policy. But while that particular illness won’t be covered (as well as anything related to that illness), a policy still covers your pet for future illnesses or injuries.

I don’t have my pet’s medical records. Can I sign up without them?

Yes. In many adoption cases for example, pets do not have medical records. If this is the case, Trupanion uses any medical records made while the pet was in a shelter or when you first started taking your pet to a veterinarian to process claims.

My dog is 10 years old and has never been covered with pet health insurance. Is that a problem?

No, we do not discriminate based on your pet’s prior pet insurance coverage or lack thereof.

I know I’m eligible for pet health care coverage, but I’ve heard about waiting periods — what are those?

We have a 5 day waiting period for injuries and a 30 day waiting period for illnesses. This means that we cover injuries that happen after 5 days from enrollment for pet insurance policy and any illnesses that develop after 30 days from the beginning of the policy start date. Please note that illnesses that show symptoms during the 30 day waiting period are considered pre-existing.

Is my pet eligible for hip dysplasia coverage?

Yes! Trupanion's policy includes coverage for hip dysplasia as long, as it is not pre-existing. Please call us to discuss any concerns with eligibility for hip dypslasia coverage.
