By looking into our data on puppy enrollments, Trupanion found that most puppies enroll around the holidays, with a spike in January. (If interested, the second most popular time of year is during the summer from June-August.) The company sees 8% more enrollments in January compared to the average month.
Data from Trupanion’s Shelter and Breeder Support Programs showed that this trend remains consistent no matter where you adopt a puppy.
While this does not necessarily reflect the exact adoption date, these trends suggest that many pet owners are bringing home their new puppy around the holidays, and you will likely start to see these furry faces in your practice — and their first exam is a great time to prepare your clients for what may come their way.
As you know, puppies have a knack for getting themselves into mischief, and Trupanion has seen it all. We looked into our claims database to see what 10 conditions puppies face most often. This is what we found:
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Foreign body ingestion
- Broken tooth
- Urinary tract infection
As you hear the pitter-patter of puppy feet enter your practice this holiday season, be sure to prepare your clients with everything they need to know to keep their new family member happy and healthy throughout their life. And remember, our certificate program is a great way to introduce new clients to medical insurance for pets!
