When's the best time to get puppy insurance?
The best time to get insurance is while your dog is a puppy because you’ll get the best value out of your coverage:
- More coverable conditions: The younger the pet, the less likely they are to have pre-existing conditions. That means more coverable conditions in case something happens. Please note that there are no pet insurance providers that cover pre-existing conditions, so the sooner you enroll, the better.
- Lowest cost: With a Trupanion policy, we base your monthly cost for life on your puppy’s age when they enrolled. That means if you enroll your pet when they’re a puppy, they’ll always be priced as a puppy — even when they’re a senior dog.
How much does puppy insurance cost?
We want our members to be comfortable with their monthly cost, so we put the power in your hands. With our flexible deductible, you can find a monthly cost that works for your budget. After all, it’s easier to budget for a regular monthly cost than a large, unexpected veterinary bill.
Pick your price by adjusting your deductible—anywhere from $0 to $1,000. The higher the deductible, the lower your monthly cost (deductibles are the amount you’re responsible for before your coverage begins).

Do I need puppy insurance?
While we’re obviously a little biased…. our answer is yes, you need puppy insurance. Allow us to tell you why.
In short, we’re pet owners just like you, so we understand how stressful it is when your beloved pet is sick or hurt. Puppy insurance helps remove the stress of wondering if or how you’re going to pay for their care. It’s much easier to budget for a monthly cost than a large, unexpected bill.
An insurance policy with Trupanion is like a bottomless bank account for those large (and small), unexpected vet bills—so you get peace of mind knowing your pet can get the care they need when they’re sick or hurt.
