Pets deserve the best, most comprehensive coverage
The majority of cats and dogs will need veterinary attention at some point in their life, and there’s no knowing how serious things could be or how much it could cost.
The New York Times reports, “If you buy a purebred animal, chances are high they have a genetic predisposition to a number of diseases, and if you rescue a mix, anything could be in store.”
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) “endorses the concept of pet health insurance that provides coverage to help defray the costs of veterinary medical care” and give “high quality and up-to-date veterinary service” to pets in need.
That's where Trupanion pet health insurance comes in.
With a Trupanion policy, all pets get one simple plan that covers all unexpected injuries and illnesses. We reimburse at 90% and never impose payout limits, so your pet can get the best care when they need it most.
Dr. John Basterfield, a veterinarian from the Juan De Fuca Veterinary clinic, agrees in the strength of Trupanion’s coverage, “The policy over the years has become broader and more comprehensive, adjusting to the increasing sophistication of medical services, diagnostics, treatments, and specialty care.”
Your coverage is easy to understand

COVERAGE FOR THE UNEXPECTED
Treatments for all unexpected injuries and illnesses, including breed-specific issues.

90% WITH UNLIMITED PAYOUTS
We cover 90% of all eligible costs with no caps or limits on how much we’ll pay out.

SHORT WAITING PERIODS
New injuries are covered 5 days after enrolling and new illnesses are covered 30 days after enrolling.
Simply put, a Trupanion policy covers the medical expenses of new unexpected injuries and illnesses your pet may face, including:
HEREDITARY CONDITIONS
We'll cover conditions your breed is prone to inheriting.
Examples:
- Elbow and hip dysplasia
- Diabetes
- Upper respiratory infections
- Thyroid disease
UNIDENTIFIED ISSUES
Even if your pet doesn't have an official diagnosis, we'll cover you.
Examples:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Cough
- Change in weight
CONGENITAL CONDITIONS
We'll cover conditions your pet has developed before birth.
Examples:
- Heart disease
- Nervous system issues
- Cataracts
- Liver disease
Whatever medical procedures your cat or dog needs for those unexpected injuries and illnesses, we'll cover. That includes things like:
Diagnostic tests | Surgeries | Hospital stays | Medications | Veterinary supplements | Herbal therapy | Prosthetic devices and carts
Just know that our policy isn't designed to cover the things that happened before you became a member. Conditions that showed signs during waiting periods or before you enrolled are considered pre-existing and are not eligible for coverage.
We also offer additional coverage that complements our policy
These riders are available at an additional cost.
Recovery and Complementary Care Rider: To fully support your pet with complementary, non-clinical procedures, opt into this rider. You’ll receive coverage for:
Acupuncture, behavioral modification, chiropractic, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, naturopathy, physical therapy, rehabilitative therapy.
Pet Owner Assistance Package: Help your pet outside the veterinary office by receiving coverage for:
Advertising and reward for lost pets, boarding fees in the event you are hospitalized, liability coverage for third-party property damage, cremation or burial for deaths due to an accident, holiday vacation cancellation costs.
You’ll also know what’s not covered
No surprises or fine print here. There are only a few things we don’t cover:
- Exam fees
- Wellness care
- Taxes (when applicable)
Pre-existing conditions are not covered by any pet medical insurance provider. Conditions that showed signs or symptoms during waiting periods or before you enroll are considered pre-existing. We want to help cats and dogs get the care they need. That’s why we have a team of trained veterinary professionals reviewing claims, so we can identify eligible conditions. If we aren’t quite sure if something is pre-existing, we work side-by-side with your veterinarian to review medical records.
We also recommend including our Recovery and Complementary Care package in your policy. For an additional cost, this package covers continuing and non-clinical treatments recommended by veterinarians.
We have covered thousands of medical conditions for thousands of pets
Since our founding, the Trupanion policy has paid over $1 billion to members to help with medical procedures related to all of these conditions:
