Trupanion Launches Special Program for Veterans

By Lisa Marcotte, Business Development Manager

Taking Care of Veteran Service Dogs

Here at Trupanion we know that service dogs play a vital role in the lives of the people they serve, and that maintaining their wellbeing is essential. We are honored to be selected by the US Department of Veterans Affairs to administer the US Veteran Service Dog Program.

Veterans with service dogs selected for this program will be able to take their dogs to any veterinarian they choose for care. Trupanion will pay 100% of costs directly to the veterinarian for any wellness, illness, or injury care.

To be eligible for the program, the US Department of Veterans Affairs must approve the dog and enroll them in this special program. Once the dog has been enrolled, Trupanion will contact the veteran and take it from there.

We Pay 100% of the Medical Bill Within 48 Hours

  1. Veterans take their service dogs to their veterinarians

  2. Veterinarians treat their dogs and bill Trupanion

  3. Trupanion pays the bill within 48 hours

What We Pay For in This VA Program

This program goes beyond what we offer in our pet medical insurance. It includes coverage for 100% of the cost related to treating any illness or injury as well as costs associated with wellness care. The only things that are not covered are included in the list below.

What We Do Not Pay For in This VA Program

  • Non prescription medications

  • Non sedated teeth cleaning

  • Non prescription foods

  • Dietary supplements

  • Grooming

  • Boarding (other than medically necessary)

  • Nail trimming

  • Flea control

  • Elective surgeries

What It Means to You

The VA is selecting veterans from across the country to participate in the US Veteran Service Dog Program. If a veteran in your area is selected by the VA, we want to make sure you are prepared.

Each participating veteran will receive a special ID card, a tag for their dog, and a letter from Trupanion. Any one of these work to identify a participating dog. If they do not have any of these, or if you or the veteran still have questions, give us a call at 855.482.0163. We are here 24/7 and can confirm eligibility.

What to Do If a Veteran Goes to Your Hospital

If a participating veteran does go to your hospital, all we ask is that you let us pay you directly. Simply treat the pet as usual and send us the bill. The only charges the veteran should be responsible for are the costs associated with the 9 items on the list of things we do not pay for. We will pay for 100% of everything else for dogs participating this US Veteran Service Dog Program.

We have provided each veteran with a specially created fax cover sheet that has a unique fax number. Please use this to send us the invoice. If they do not have this when they visit you, you can either give us a call or download a copy from our US Veteran Service Dog Program web pages. We will issue payment within 48 hours.
If you have any questions, give us a call 24/7 at 855.482.0163.

We Are Honored to Be Involved

We are honored that the US Department of Veterans Affairs chose us to provide this service for qualified veterans. If you have the opportunity to provide medical treatment for a service dog in this program, we thank you.
