How we determine your monthly cost
A premium, or monthly cost, is the amount a pet owner pays every month for their pet’s medical insurance coverage. This number is determined by looking at a few different factors:
Who determined my monthly cost?
We’re proud to be a data-driven company with a team of licensed experts who ensure appropriate pricing for all pets. Our team of actuaries focuses on medical insurance for pets exclusively, rather than splitting their time between multiple products such as human health or other types of insurance. This gives us a key advantage in understanding the cost of veterinary care.
What makes Trupanion pricing different?
TTrupanion is unique because we are the only provider of medical insurance for pets that uses your pet’s age at enrollment to determine your plan’s price—for life. For example, if you sign up your puppy at 8 weeks old, we’ll price them as an 8-week old for their entire life. But all other providers use what’s called “birthday pricing.” Birthday pricing means that an insurer will automatically raise your rate when your pet gets older—on top of all other increases that account for infl ation or other factors. Not our favorite way to celebrate.
Can my monthly cost change?
Sure; just because we don’t use birthday pricing, that doesn’t mean your rates will never change as a Trupanion member. All insurers must increase or decrease rates due to changes in the cost of veterinary care. And while your pet has Trupanion coverage, your monthly cost will go up or down based upon the underlying costs of all pets within your subcategories. That’s how we share the risk fairly among all of our members.
