Treatment for all new dental illness and injury, such as:
- Extractions of permanent and baby (deciduous) teeth
- Coverage for retained baby teeth (if your pet is enrolled by 6 months old)
- Root canal treatments for canine or carnassial teeth
- Endodontic treatments performed on other teeth
As with other pet insurance policies, a Trupanion policy does not cover pre-existing conditions consistent with dental disease.

How we compare
Treatment for all new dental illnesses and injury
No dental coverage, except cost for extraction or reconstruction of teeth damaged in an accident.
No treatment for dental illness. Treatment for new dental injuries, if approved by their Medical Director.
If there are any signs of dental illness prior to enrolling, there is no coverage for any new and unrelated dental injuries or illnesses.
What's not covered: As with most pet insurance companies, a Trupanion policy will not cover teeth cleaning (prophylaxis) or its associated fees (such as anesthesia or pre-anesthetic blood work). We also do not cover toothbrushes and toothpastes or dental foods, chews, or rinses.
We rely on pet owners to properly care for cats and dogs in order for our coverage to take effect. For a Trupanion policy to pay for dental care, pet owners need to:
