How we determine your monthly cost
It is our promise that all Trupanion pets will have high-quality coverage at a fair price. You trust us when you enroll your pet, and it’s only fair that we keep our promise for your pet’s entire life.
Your monthly cost is unique to your pet
To get you the best coverage when you need it, we charge you a unique monthly price which is determined by a few different factors:
A deep dive into pricing
Our team of actuaries determine your price based on your pet’s unique factors and the cost of veterinary care you could expect to pay over your pet’s lifetime.
Let's take a closer look at our pricing factors:
Typically, older pets could expect to have higher monthly costs because the conditions they face will be more frequent and more expensive. This is why we recommend enrolling your pet while they’re young. Young pets are also less likely to have pre-existing conditions, which means more issues could be covered.
Some breeds are more prone to certain conditions. An English Bulldog may be priced higher, yet they could on average expect to see more of that money returned in payouts.
Pets that live in a city may also be more expensive, because they have better access to advanced medical treatments.
Our claims data shows that female dogs have more medical issues and for more expensive conditions than male dogs. However, male cats are more likely to have unexpected issues than female cats.
We use these pricing factors so that we can pay your pet’s unexpected bills when they need help the most, at a fair cost to you. We’re committed to this pricing to help bring you high-quality insurance.
Why we price for quality
The unexpected happens, and the chances are high that your pet will have surprise health issues in their lifetime.
A common issue we see in dogs are ruptured cruciate ligaments, which can cost $3,200 - $4,300.
Even something as simple as allergy medicine for a pet can cost $80/month.
Our unlimited payouts and 90% coverage on eligible costs can help you give your pet the very best care.
Some providers cut corners by excluding breed-specific issues or capping payouts. Instead, we focus on quality coverage that can help you protect your pet for life.
We love informed decisions. See our policy for full coverage details.
We bring a high level of transparency to all that we do:
Even our policy is straightforward and honest.
Your monthly cost is locked in for a year
We’re here to help you plan for the future. To help, we promise that your monthly cost will not increase for at least 12 months. Plus, your rates will not increase automatically just because your pet gets older—we call this ‘birthday pricing,’ and Trupanion is the only company that doesn’t use this as a price factor.
Please note: Just because we don’t use birthday pricing doesn’t mean your monthly cost will always stay the same. In fact, you can expect your premium to change due to the cost and use of advanced veterinary care in your area. If your cost does either increase or decrease, we’ll reach out to you at least one month before to let you know.
How to pick your monthly cost
You can pick a monthly cost that fits your budget by selecting a deductible.
A higher deductible means a lower monthly cost. A lower deductible means a higher monthly cost, though payouts happen sooner. You can learn more about deductibles here.
You can also lower your deductible within 30 days of enrolling or could raise it any time to help control your monthly cost.
You can choose the best deductible for your specific pet—and your savings!
